You seem to have misunderstood me or thought I am someone else.
I don’t support such an expansionist theory. I don’t support any of them, too little data for me to pick one.
Like I said, it’s all theories. But I’l pretend for now that the expansionist one is true and civilizations don’t destroy themselves. Just to answer you. There are a few possibilities (get crazier with each one, but all possible) :
**A)** We are the first technological civilization in the history of the universe. Solar systems with planets might be ubiquitous, so might be life on those planets (which I myself believe), but this does not mean intelligent life has evolved before. Even if intelligence has evolved, technology doesn’t have to.
**B)** Intelligent civilizations are all around us, but we are too primitive to detect them. Because the time window is so small we are very unlikely to be at the same tech level to any other civilization close by (even if they are everywhere) Almost all we use for technological communications is radio and it’s derivatives in all the differing EM spectrums. This might be horrifically outdated technology by galactic standards. Civilizations might use directly aimed burst of EM to communicate (undetectable if you are in any other direction) or something completely different (communication only through hyperspace, or other dimensions etc etc.). Time scales the ET operate on and their chemistry all might also be completely different changing what they and their technology looks like etc etc.
**C)** The next step after space domination in the standard tech tree civilizations usually follow is something completely crazy and almost unimaginable to us. Maybe all civilizations that reach a certain level completely transport themselves to hyperspace. Maybe the next step is introspection: they upload their personality and identities into a cyber world and the huge supercomputers running those worlds have no interest in communication with anyone outside and thus would not be detectable. Maybe they ascend to pure energy, upload themselves into the very fabric of space and time itself etc etc. We have about as much chance knowing their capabilities and motives as an ant does knowing ours. After a certain amount of expansion and advancement further expansion might not take place in the standard model. For whatever reason.
**D)** There is a civilization of hyper advanced death machines scanning the whole galaxy for advanced technology to keep themselves the lone masters of the galaxy. Each time sufficient amount of tech is detected the whole galaxy is wiped out again. So civilizations either hide or get destroyed. I am actually making a space RPG right now with this version as the plot point.
I wrote way too much now, but the point is I could keep going. There is such an immense amount of possibility and we know so little. I wouldn’t name any of the current theories as being probable.
