If you look at the geography of the Olympic Peninsula and consider the strategic importance of the Bremerton naval base and the Boeing plants around Seattle, the “Triangle of Fire” formed by Fort Worden, Fort Flagler, and Fort Casey would present a very big difficulty to any fleet trying to move up the Puget Sound. This was a very real threat throughout WWII. And you know the military, always prepared for the last war. I think that is what has these forts operating into the 50s even though at that point nuking Seattle and the Puget Sound was the more likely way to die in a war in the Pacific Northwest.
In any event, thats a cool picture of a very cool place. Highly recommended.
