I was curious about this as well. I was just asking my dad about this kind of stuff on Xmas, as the new neighbors just built a house. I told him that I would love to have an old Victorian or Colonial style house, and as much as I love history, would not want to buy an old ‘original’ one, because if it has not been updated with time, will be a money sink. I asked him if you were to buy a plot of land if you could have them build something like that, and he said you could, but it would be expensive. As it would be a custom built house, where almost all houses today come from just a few different plans. He said they stopped building those kinds of beautiful houses because they were inefficient as time went by, and hard to keep up. Just as /u/subcommandermarcos said. Kinda made me sad. We had many nice old houses we were looking at buying, but after I realistically looked at them, and realized how much work they will be to bring up to date to my liking, I might as well buy a modern house, or wait til I have enough money to have one built to my specifications. It’s sad seeing beautiful architecture like this just falling apart though.
