It’s a 450ft phallic structure situated on the beach of the UK’s “gay capital”. It will cost somewhere in the region of £36m to build and there has been a lot of council money put up to build the privately owned project.
It was a shame, the original pier has been derelict for as long as I can remember. IIRC it was struck by lightning during a tremendous storm back when I was only a few years old. It had been closed ever since that initial fire, but the residents of Brighton fought and fought over the years to try and have it restored. We even secured millions of pounds of lottery funding at one point, but it still wouldn’t have been enough.
It went up for sale for £1 on the premise that the new owner would restore it, but there was incredible resistance from the owners of the Palace Pier a mile down the beach. They were stopping at nothing from making sure the West Pier would never be rebuilt and take business away from their pier. There were two more fires a few years ago on what was left of the West Pier and they completely stripped it of any chance of restoration. Most people believe they were arson attacks planned by the owners of the Palace pier, but nothing was ever proved.
If you look through old photos on google, you can see what a [great looking piece of architecture](http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8-pqjjrn8is/UvO9Yeo6fUI/AAAAAAAAaxE/WlsZExhwoBI/s1600/717650034_52854d6ec1_o.jpg) it was and slowly watch it destroyed and decay.
The Palace Pier is not looked after the way it should be. They have crammed as many steel framed rides at the end of it as they can, it looks like a [construction site from afar](http://www.marcpinter.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/MarcPinter_BrightonPierFairground.jpg) IMO. They have no competition so they can charge what they like. It’s probably the most popular tourist trap in Brighton and it should be so much better than it actually is. It looks fun and nice from afar, but once you get on there it’s pretty grim, cheap and tacky looking.
rant over, sorry.
