It has less to do with what’s good for the patient, more to do with the fact that it’s cheaper. However, the people who lived in these facilities aren’t able to function as independent adults in society. A lot of the meds that make the voices stop, for example, turn the person into someone who can’t speak without slurring, can’t walk without shuffling, and let’s be honest – that person isn’t going to get a job to earn more than minimum wage, which may or may not include health insurance, which may or may not pay for their medication and therapy. It’s a fucked system.
