Collapsing house adjacent to graveyard, Accomack County, Virginia.

I am not exceptionally knowledgeable in burial practices, but I am intrigued by the metal holders/loops(?) on the top of these graves. I’ve just never seen that done (and I live in the same region as this photo).

If it was a standard 6 foot grave and they didn’t fill the dirt back in, I’d think eventually the area around it would collapse. If they filled in the dirt, there wouldn’t be a need for the cover. Having searched for “Accomack County, Virginia,” I think I partly understand now. These are likely tombs or shallow graves as this land is on the peninsula part of Virginia, and it is probably quite close to sea level, thus preventing deep burial.

The hooks would have ropes run through them and used to position the cover over them. Not sure why I haven’t seen that technique elsewhere though.

Can anyone confirm or yield more information?
