He uses salt blocks and puts feed out. I never really liked his baiting methods, but after you pointed out the ineffectiveness due to smell, I can see why he might need to bait. Plus the deer around here are use to this sort of thing being around. I’ve seen deer on farmers porches, and right next to makeshift shed’s (old rail cars, semi-trailers, whatever they can get cheaply that’s pre-built). Also, he had a clear shot across a half mile wide field with a stream in the middle, so even if they didn’t go close to the bus, they would go to the stream.
