The Republic of China was seized by KMT strongmen, who purged the communists and formed a one party state. The communists survived the purge however, instigated a peasant rebellion in the form of its Red Guard, then routed KMT soldiers until they were pushed back to the island of Taiwan, which today still bears a KMT insignia on its flag.
The two major political coalitions in Taiwan are the blue and the greens, who disagree on being a Republic of Taiwan, or a Republic of China. They change government by democratic election. The People’s Republic of China is politically advised by the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, a congress of various political parties, whose Chairman has traditionally been the Communist party’s leader and the head of state.
