What? No. Someone noticed a correlation between the use of leaded gas and the violent crime rate, superimposed the charts over each other and then a bunch of idiotic news articles were written insisting the correlation showed ironclad proof of causation.
Another explanation I’ve heard for the drop in violent crime was Roe v. Wade. A bunch of poor children weren’t born and 15-25 years later they weren’t committing crimes. This one isn’t proven either but it’s as good a guess as any.
Correlation often can point you in the right direction but you still have to have proof and the correlation by itself is not proof (though the media seems to think it is).
