Is that speculation or do you know this for a fact? I haven’t been there before, so I said what I said (“It seems to be the smaller of the two wells on the estate (see the wiki article)”) based of the information I read in the links I provided.
Also, here is another website that I didn’t include in my original comment, which I’m going to add now. It mentions the same thing, that the photo OP provided is the other entrance.
Also, according to the wikipedia article, “Of the two wells, the larger one contains a 27 meter spiral staircase spaced by small landings.” Most of the photos you see online of the well do not have a roof over it and include a spiral staircase, which I figured meant that OP’s photo is of the smaller well (“The smaller well has straight stairs that connect ring-shaped floors levels with one another”).
Edit: I think you may be correct in that it’s not actually the well, but I do believe it is part of the architecture of the smaller well.
