Generally there are a lot of abandoned properties particularly in the west and southwest of the island. What happened in most cases was the eldest son inherited the house and the land. Many of these men never married due to a number of reasons such as social isolation or just having to spend too much time working the land to be able to find a wife. Ireland was a fickle place like that up to the advent of social media. Anyway these men grew old and infirm and eventually died leaving no one to inherit the land. Generally there are relations but many are never contacted and the land falls into abandonment. I think after some time the local council can claim it back but I’m not sure. My grand uncle died last year and left a small house and about a half acre (that my grandmother grew up in) to family in Dublin. The place is about ten minutes from my house and since he left the house I haven’t seen anyone tend to it. It’s a shame really, my own mother is 70 and spent her childhood summers there. She’s never said anything but I know she’d love a poke round the place for old photos or anything that might remind her of her mother, but, such is life.
