Don’t buy into a lot of what you see online. I’d say more than half of what you see on this sub posted as Detroit ruin is several years old and has been demolished or re-developed. I’m from Detroit, downtown is still vibrant and fine. The outer areas go from totally nice, to OK, to be careful, to stay the fuck out unless you know someone. It’s just the shocking headlines get the most attention “Detroit homes for sale for $7!” When in reality the properties are a huge liabilty with tons of back taxes owed and a structure that is going to cost you thousands to demolish and remove to even start over. Recently Chinese speculators have moved in and started buying up these cheap properties, paying to demolish the structure and paying all the back taxes in order to own a huge amount of vacant real estate and sit on it. They will just wait for the area to gain value and get decent leadership. If you you are bored wiki Kwame Kilpatrick and the Detroit City Council to see the way tax payers have been raped in the past. There is still a lot of work to be done don’t get me wrong, but it’s not like when I go downtown I’m stepping over dead bodies and burned out cars. If half of reddit were just told your going to be taken out for a good time in a major city without knowing where they were they would have no idea they were in Detroit.
