My professor has done anthropological research on how people use and transform spaces. She chose this site because of its multi use history. How did we design the space to fit our idea of the Lunatic, then transform it when the idea shifted toward medical illness, how we reused that space for a prison system, and then finally how it is being currently developed into luxury condos and a resort type area over the next 10 years.
The property is not technically abandoned, it is owned but vacant. The history of trespassing involves vandalism, injuries, but also copper theft. They pursue trespassers also because this is a residential area, people live here and illegal activities don’t fly well with “‘luxury resorts.”
I recommend going to the offices or calling up “The Villages at Staunton” and seeing if you can possibly schedule some sort of walking tour.
