Almost all abandoned places are illegal to go to, because the land is still privately owned. A couple friends and I learned this the hard way after the cops found me exploring an abandoned school.
The charges would have been trespassing on private property (even though it had been long unused,) breaking and entering, and possession of burglary tools (a couple of socket wrenches.)
Luckily for us, the cops were feeling generous, and they let us off, only marking us down for suspicious activity, and telling us not to return.
But yah, be very careful when exploring abandoned areas, it is often illegal, and I would have been charged with two felonies and a misdemeanor if the cops had not let me go.
