Villers Abbey founded in 1146. Is an ancient Cistercian abbey occupied by an order of Catholic monks and nuns. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the abbey’s fortunes continued to dwindle and was finally abandoned in 1796 in the wake of the French Revolution. Wallonia, Belgium.

Been there, it was delightfully misty and creepy at first, the the clouds broke and it was gorgeous.

It’s a tourist attraction, but when we were there (2002) there were no tours or anything, just a walk through and a map.

Some of the semi exposed cellars had become bat caves, the actual sanctuary was amazing. we ran back when the clouds broke and got some amazing (pre-digital) pictures.

If you live in the area or will be traveling near the area, it’s worth a 1/2 day. Tehn go to Saint Sixtus and get some Westy!
