The town was a Croatian stronghold in a Serbian section of Croatia. The Serb army besieged the town and the outgunned and outnumbered defenders held out for a period of time before eventually being overrun. The Serbs then massacred those who remained.
It is called the Croatian Stalingrad and the 2000 Croats went toe to toe with around 40,000 Serbs who were aided by tanks, artillery, and air power. Serbs suffered heavy casualties (15,000) along with the loss of around 300 tanks and armored vehicles.
The town was later retaken by the Croatian army and the tower became a symbol of the heroics of the Croatian troops there.
