I was just about to edit my last post but since you’ve responded I have a chance to go on a bit.
I felt bad about what I wrote there because I shouldn’t disparage my neighbors. People are extremely nice here whether you’re a foreigner or not. The farmers who get drunk on cheap wine are poor and that’s nothing to make fun of them about. They’re cool people and many of them are Buddhists and don’t drink at all. That’s what made me feel like a dick. I know quite a few local farmers who are very very cool and although it sounds like a pun here they are the living definition of down-to-earth. I buy their produce and I thank them for their kind labor. Many of them are completely organic as well and it’s super cheap to eat if you buy directly from the farmers.
If I was to move out or sell my house I’d just go somewhere nearby and start over. There are some gorgeous places all over this area. It’s like Hawaii. The truth is that if you get in with the farmers you don’t even need to squat. You can rent from someone super cheap if they’ll let you. I’m talking about places with outrageous views of the ocean on twenty acres with tiered rice paddies. Get a twenty year lease and build with sand bags. It’s not that hard to be cool with them if you just hang out and spend time negotiating. I am old enough that I could pass for a subsistence farmer but everybody around here already knows me so that’s a different story.
The thing is, they will try and rope you into teaching English. For that, I’d pay for security.
